That's awesome! I remember working on the puzzle editor with everyone and hoping to hear exactly that as an outcome. When I first played an NES game as a kid, I wanted to make experiences like that for other people.

We knew that the portal gun was going to be the right choice after Still Alive but I needed to manage team morale and demonstrate it was sound. So we would do play tests with half old mechanic and half new portal mechanics and that gave us clear buy-in.

To be fair to Geoff I think he did a great job considering how quickly he had to parachute in and make these, so there would be no way to get it all perfect.

It's good to take these things with a pinch of salt. Though Gabe did indeed say this line, the team worked over weeks to slowly build up two parallel versions of the game to test with people within the company to demonstrate to them and the team itself that we should move directions.

Incorrect. The team made this decision over a period of time, it was not handed down by anyone.
