was on 14th Street today and forgot how controversial this apartment building (the Harper, opened 2015) was on the DC neighborhood blogs. one blogger called it “Wallachzilla” after the side street. this is maybe 7 floors at its tallest? wonder where they are now

Some thoughts on the rarely-explicitly-articulated idea that favoring new housing/development in your community makes you a bad neighbor, a traitor, or sort of by definition not a real member of the community at all thedeletedscenes.substack.com/p/hi-its-the...

the Montgomery County animal shelter has become overcrowded because families are giving up their pets due to housing insecurity— meanwhile, a new subsidized housing complex here in Silver Spring won’t allow pets. these things are connected: to clear the shelters, we need pet-friendly housing

Last year 600 people were hit while walking or biking in Montgomery County. We must make our roads safer for everyone.
grateful to @evanmglass.bsky.social for speaking to the East Silver Spring Civic Association tonight and listening to my neighbors, who want something done about traffic safety. just this year drivers hit an 11yo in February, me and my dog in May, and this week a kid biking to school—

like many folks I did not know that parking in bike lanes technically wasn’t illegal in Montgomery County, at least until this week. now we just need MCPD to enforce it— www.thebanner.com/politics-pow...
Parking in bike lanes will soon be illegal in Montgomery County
Drivers will now face a $60 fine and a traffic citation for parking in a bike lane in Montgomery County.

a useful thread about the other big project happening rn on University Boulevard—making it easier and safer to walk and bike on this busy, fast road
Hello! I am back in the community meeting saddle after a stretch of heavy work and a lull in local meetings. Tonight’s meeting is the University Boulevard PSAP.

Democrats notched big wins around the country in yesterday’s election – but another trend, nationally and locally, is that pro-homes candidates also prevailed.

The sandwich came apart and "kind of exploded" on his chest upon impact, he says.

"I could smell the onions and mustard."

idk why anyone's surprised that downtown Silver Spring doesn't have a ton of lunchtime business, but fascinating to hear that Solaire Social's bar was actually the now-closed food hall's big draw. a rare W for the decade-long push for more nightlife here www.bizjournals.com/washington/n...

The matching t-shirts that said something along the lines of “save Colesville’s charm, say no to townhomes” were worn by a crowd almost entirely made up of old white people, as expected at a 2:30 pm hearing on a Thursday.

today the MoCo Planning Board votes on the Notley Road rezoning and I just testified on behalf of @ggwash.org, but only after people claimed that building townhomes in their neighborhood would lead to "crime" and "chaos." it's not surprising, but still so disappointing

Don’t be childish about townhouses in Montgomery County
On the walk home, there were townhouses like mine on one side, and on the other were bigger, stand-alone houses. I thought nothing of it until, a few days in, one kid said to me: “Your family is poor ...

I got an email that said basically I don’t dislike townhomes, I just don’t like *these* proposed townhomes. a tale as old as time! read this, then email the Planning Board ⬇️
Some Montgomery County neighbors are big mad about a proposed townhouse development and saying some pretty gnarly things about the types of people who might live in them.

at the end of my street just now, at a stop sign, a driver thought my dog and I were walking too slow in the crosswalk so she decided to just go ahead anyway. why should I be surprised? Montgomery County has shown her there will never be a consequence for it
Under the leadership of @mcgexec.bsky.social, MCDOT has continued the ossified approach of prioritizing traffic speeds, making all road users less safe.

I need Montgomery County CMs (including @cmkatestewart.bsky.social and
@evanmglass.bsky.social) to push for real reforms to stop killing kids.

the Montgomery County executive is in charge of transportation—including appointing the agency head. who gets elected could make a huge difference in how safe our streets are, which is why @ggwash.org will endorse for county executive in the 2026 primary
@evanmglass.bsky.social @willjawando.bsky.social and @andrewfriedson.bsky.social want to lead Montgomery County but I have heard nothing from them about how they will reform MCDOT to start installing real safety improvements for pedestrians and bikers.

Do nothing, and we'll keep seeing more deaths.
