Enjoying a quiet evening reading about how Germany’s WWI policy of total submarine warfare backfired and trying not to actively think of the parallel to the US president’s newfound fetish for sinking neutral ships seemingly at random…
A page from “The Literary History of the World War,” which reads, “Nothing, however, could obscure the fact that Germany's crowning act of barbarism, lifting her hand against the whole world, making no distinction between friend and foe, had accomplished appalling results. It had sent, by February 1, perhaps 5,000,000 tons of shipping to the bottom, much of which was under neutral flags. It had drowned some hundreds of unarmed persons, many of whom were subjects of countries with whom Germany was at peace. But what military results had been attained? At the end of twelve months England, with her face toward Germany, never stood more securely erect. France had seen the picked troops of Prussia and Bavaria giving way to her valor at Verdun and on the Somme. America had come into the fighting, bringing enormous resources. Food and ammunition supplies for the Entente had become assured. Nearly half a million American troops would soon be in France; that number would eventually be trebled, and would be followed by more if needed. Ships were being built to transport them and all necessary supplies.”

Hey fellas, when the government asks you to donate the leather from your shoes and start taking appetite suppressants, is that a sign that the First World War is going well for your side?
As a sign of conditions the Rheinische-Westfalische Zeitung, the organ of Krupp in- terests, appealed to the people to "go barefoot this summer and help the Fatherland." In view of the alarming scareity of leather, "rich and poor alike, should willingly dispense vith boots and shoes. " Other German newspapers adver- tised a new drug as "an excellent preparation to still the premature feelings of hunger and thirst." This drug was "not a substitute for the daily minimum nutrition," but it had been used with the greatest success by persons "made ill by hunger between meals."
