I dare hope that the next Democratic Senate leader isn’t in the Senate yet.

If a house is on fire then you have to fight the fire. If the entries are obstructed you have to get rid of the obstruction. If the firefighters won't fight the fire then you have to get new firefighters.
This is a metaphor.

Alt: Mark Wahlberg in The Departed says "i'm the guy who does his job; you must be the other guy"

Mamdani created vision that shamed this cowardice: by having standards, and then showing everyone what his standards are, and then proving that he truly held those standards by standing for something without shame. This tapped into something powerful.

There are people who are claiming that Mamdani's victory is a one-off deal, an non-replicable unicorn. These are folk who insist that what hasn't won yet is the only way to win in the future, and what has already just won can't possibly win. The old Democratic-consultant gaslight shuffle.

A lot of highly-placed Democrats are ashamed of these things, and begin by agreeing with Republicans that they have shown solidary when they haven't, and that it is bad even though it isn't. They then try to convince voters to support them by promising to stop, when they never started.

Wasn't ashamed to talk about government as the way that human beings organize and administer human society for the benefit of humans, which is what government is—even though it meant that he would be portrayed as a city-destroying dangerous Marxist terrorist jihadi.
