Always a pleasure to visit #Manchester - but even more so now the #Bee integrated public #transport network is up-and-running.

Easy-peasy to get around, even for tourists like me...

#Planners in #Leeds doing a good job of mixing old and new buildings and patching together public spaces...

But still a lot to do!

Sadly I didn't take a photo of the gatecrashing squirrel...

But can offer you this sleepy cat...

Beautiful villas in #Dinard, France, built for wealthy merchants in late 19th century, a time of huge wealth inequality.

Great to see so many being immaculately restored - but renovation of this quality must cost millions.

Presumably only possible as a result of today's huge wealth inequality...?

Fascinating sentence in the English Devolution Bill guidance saying government is moving towards a '#health in all #policies' approach... #HIAP

Fascinating article in today's #FT about traditional process of 'beetling' Irish linen, including this throwaway sentence...

Mattresses for #cows? How nice. Any cows...? Special cows...? High net worth cows? Poorly cows? I think we need to know...

Great to be in Parliament today for the launch of Play England's 10 year strategy and @tomhayesmp.bsky.social announcement of a new APPG for play...

Good to see #play going up the #policy agenda after 10 years of children's needs and rights being overlooked...

Over on the other place, #MHCLG is *still* posting this image of a #car-dependent, low-density, #unsustainable north American suburb to illustrate the '1.5 million new #homes' message.

Lots of people have commented on how inappropriate it is.

It's a tiny detail.
But so telling.

East Tilbury is a modernist #NewTown in #Essex, built by the eccentric #Bata company in the 1930s. The journalist, John Tusa, grew up there and described this extraordinary #place in a recent talk, which I've written about in the latest issue of Town & Country Planning @thetcpa.bsky.social #DoCoMoMo

This #book is a revelation. Instead of an overwhelmingly long list of mystifying dos and don'ts, it explains the *why* of #gardening.

Once you know that, the rest falls into place.

Interesting that it's by a scientist not a #horticulturalist. Experts can be awful at explaining things to novices...

Bizarre that today's #FT has piece about ongoing inaccurate #statistics published by #ONS - but doesn't even mention the report by @profalices.bsky.social, published by government this week: calmly, but profoundly, damning.

(Sorry for not posting link, can't get FT tokens to work on Bsky.)

Blimey!

Even Andy Haldane says Labour's acquiescence to 'Treasury brain' is damaging the country.

If only leading #economists had said this a decade ago, instead of insulting Greece for rejecting austerity...

'The question isn't whether France got America right, but how?'

Perceptive piece by Janan Ganesh in the #FT. 'France has remained the awkward one in pressing for national and European autonomy.'

Many of us have wondered why the UK was blind to the profound differences in values. Ganesh suggests...

As the world goes mad, how soothing to lunch at the Tudor Tearooms in #Whitstable.

Pot of tea (loose leaf, with extra hot water). Gingham tablecloths. Elderly ladies chatting about patchwork quilts they are making and new babies in their families.

Perfect.

It's worth buying @inews.co.uk on Saturdays just for #PatrickCockburn - his insight into foreign affairs is deeply informed.

Today, his focus is English politics: again he gets straight to the point. The government's obsession with #GDP is politically illiterate...

Fantastic morning planting #trees with #TreesForCities and lovely volunteers from all over south London.
Planted 12 holly trees & three beach trees, chatted to lots of interesting people, ate delicious curry for lunch. Off home for a hot bath! If you'd like to plant trees, check the TfC website...

Speaking @thetcpa.bsky.social conference, @gideonamos.bsky.social says #LibDems support building new #homes, but don't support proposed changes to #GreenBelt.

'Nothing undermines #planning as much as a politician saying "you thought that #GreenSpace was protected, but we're going to build on it".'
November 26, 2024 at 12:30 PM
Powerful point made by @caglarkoksal.com at today's @thetcpa.bsky.social conference: #planning is focussed on sustainable development, but in today's world that's not enough, we now need planning #policy that focuses on #health - in it's widest sense - health of #people and #planet.

Surely this is very odd?

Why would *any* prime minister say that *any* minister will remain in post for the next five years?

Evidence that #art improves #health and increases life expectancy, as reported in The Guardian.

On the one hand, this feels like common sense: all cultures, throughout history and across the world, have valued art.

On the other hand, it's fantastic that there is now #evidence...
