Authoritarian regimes attract the cruel and indifferent. It creates space where abuse is justified, often shielded behind science, or framed as a response to imagined threats that strip people of their humanity. It’s sanctioned cruelty by those who, in any other context, might be called psychopaths.

In authoritarian regimes, lives at the bottom hold little value, treated as little more than meat for the grinder. They follow orders blindly, even when they clearly go against their own interests. Reduced to pawns, they operate under a code easily bent to serve corrupt ends.

Bad faith actors thrive on useful idiots. They seek out the angry, the uncurious, and those chasing status or meaning to serve their own profit or power. Some don’t see the role they play; others are fixated by rules. Many lack the empathy, wisdom or courage to question anything.

High-ranking officials can’t outrun the consequences of their actions. Bureaucracy, moral detachment, corporate manoeuvring, or the shield of plausible deniability won’t protect them. Their seniority offers just enough visibility to signal sacrifice—blameable, forgettable, and ultimately expendable.

I'm not sure I see it as a left/right thing anymore. I don't think all Reform voters see themselves as RW and the party will certainly want to target labour voters by focussing on the left behind communities with low prospects. Our playbook needs updating.
