I've been reading A LOT about JJK's parallels to Budhism. I'm still not sure this is the final version of the conversation, but I like how it highlights Suguru's search for meaning and also sets up Satoru actually becoming something akin to a Bodhisattva after HI.
Suguru rubbed his eyes. “You know where my mangas are. Why are you reading the biography of Siddhartha Gautama?” Satoru didn’t look up. “It was lying there filled with book marks.” His voice trailed off, casual but warm. “I complained about the Iliad, but this is sooo much more boring. How you like it is beyond me.” “It’s reflexive,” Suguru said, taking the book back for a second and flipping to a marked passage. “Besides, it’s not pointless to think about this stuff. The idea of rising but not leaving everyone behind… Bodhisattvas do it. Reach enlightenment, then stay so everyone else has a chance, I mean. That kind of selflessness… I’ve always thought it was worth trying for.” Satoru wrinkled his nose. “Sounds like extra credit in spiritual form.” “It’s compassion.” Suguru corrected. “Letting go of ego. Still, the values it teaches are worth something.” “I don’t need to be taught values.” Suguru gave him a flat stare. “You’re incapable of humility for five minutes, aren’t you?” “Humility is for the weak.” Satoru bragged. “You’d get kicked out of Nirvana.” “Fuck Nirvana.” Satoru sighed dramatically. “I’m very happy with my earthly attachments.” He leaned in before Suguru could give him another lecture, one hand sliding up to cradle the side of Suguru’s neck. No training, no missions, no getting endlessly annoyed by Gojo. Just the gushing of a soft breeze threatening to undo his lazily tied up bun. The chirping from far-away birds catering to their young. Wild hydrangeas blooming on the skirts of the woods that surround Jujutsu High.
