They were partners in all the ways that mattered. Collaborators, Mel would introduce them at parties, and Jayce would nudge Viktor’s shoulder lightly, murmuring co-conspirators. It always felt like they were getting away with something, a trick they were pulling on everyone else, to be allowed to make what they loved with the person they loved most in the world. It felt like mischief, sitting curled around a notebook at three or four in the morning, marking out hasty staffs while Viktor told him what would happen next, hour after hour spinning out stories. It was magic to him, what Viktor could do. It felt like sitting in the presence of magic. And then, like most magic tricks, it ended. In the background, Jayce playing piano while Viktor sings with him. They’re next to a window with a blue moon shining. In the foreground, both of them looking tired, Jayce with his long hair and scraggly beard. “Do you think we’re bad for each other?” he asks.

Jayce and Viktor are spending their time under the Firelight tree. Viktor's knees are on the soft ground, he hovers above Jayce and slightly pins him by the hand, fixing the hair that glows in the sunlight with the other one. Jayce lays propped on his elbows, grabbing a moss beneath his hand, his other hand rests on Viktor's thigh. They are smiling to each other; Jayce's expression is a little awed while Viktor's smile is soft and playful. Viktor's little garden surrounds them: wisteria, ferns, ivy; all of it wrap the tree's massive roots while the firelights fly around, glistening even more in the sun and feeling the bond two men share.
