Tom Shippey’s “The Road to Middle Earth” reminds me of the Finnish Kalevela poem cycle, which in high school I argued was an influence on Tom Bombadil because of magic through singing, and has this on other possible sources.

Having narrated The Lord of the Rings to my youngest (5 1/2) once, and working through it a second time, we’ve now decided to watch the movies. Lovely seeing these characters through her eyes.
