Love, fairness and photos.
I really enjoyed this article the first time, and I re-read it tonight and enjoyed it again today. I agree that the change can be incremental, but I disagree with you that this is the optimal pathway. If the benefits are shared widely, everyone becomes a vested interest in the transition.

Are you proud to use fossil fuels for any of those things? Nothing wrong with that it’s just a little bit weird to me when there are alternative, superior technologies available.

Because I believe in making choices based on my worldview lmao. I fly on holiday too, but would happily give that up. I heat my home too, with electricity. I drive an EV which is powered by my solar.
December 13, 2025 at 1:46 PM
lol ok, why would you have that expectation?
December 13, 2025 at 1:39 PM
1. You said animal products not animal agriculture. Bit of a difference there.
2. If we get down to 15% of emissions and I can still have eggs I’m actually ok with that. I’ll accept that sausages are more morally sound than a dodge ram.
December 13, 2025 at 1:38 PM
The objective is to transition off fossil fuels. I don’t think it’s hectoring to say that. I think it’s naive to think we can just accept expansion of fossil fuels on the one hand to appease a mythical public backlash while supporting action on climate change. That is just inconsistent messaging.
December 13, 2025 at 1:35 PM
But the main point here is that 1.5C is a political goal, for an issue which requires a political solution. That political solution can involve demonising fossil fuels as long as the general public get a visible benefit from renewables, I.e a part of electricity bills telling them how much they save
December 13, 2025 at 9:44 AM
No it shouldn’t be demonised and I don’t think consuming animal products has anything to do with the conversation.
December 13, 2025 at 9:39 AM
Do you think people will suddenly switch because it is in their economic self interest to do so? Would this not be a quicker process if fossil fuel use was stigmatised?
December 13, 2025 at 9:16 AM
Ok, so if I believe that climate change is being caused by the burning of fossil fuels, and that climate change is a bad thing, why would I want to pretend that choosing to burn fossil fuels is a choice which should not be demonised?
December 13, 2025 at 9:16 AM
Michael, are you saying we can fix climate change without reducing fossil fuel use?

That’s what I was saying and you said I was wrong here. Just want to clarify your point.
December 13, 2025 at 9:05 AM
Hahaha Michael, with respect, there are no magic solutions to climate change other than shutting off major sources of additional CO2. Deplatforming Tony Abbott is absolutely part of this solution.

I wish these guys would stop listening to Tone instead of being the other kind of tone deaf.

I love wood fires and think they should all be banned.

Trilemma.

Not only that but as a carer for someone with chronic migraines, I’ve wasted enough of my limited time in this planet listening to the world’s loudest trolleys.
November 29, 2025 at 9:57 AM
No they have thought about how to make everything maximum volume and minimum comfort.

This is a hill I am willing to die on. Make all hospital - including ED - into somewhere people might want to be.

Hasn’t there just been a massive reduction in the oil price? If I were a government this is the time I’d also announce we weren’t drilling for any more oil.
November 27, 2025 at 10:18 AM
Last sitting week of the year so it’s actually going to be longer.
November 25, 2025 at 9:57 AM
Yeah, I mean what do they think will happen if other countries cut emissions? Why is that only a good thing if they don’t cut demand for our fossil fuels? It’s bizarre.
November 18, 2025 at 12:12 PM
Nah I mean the guardian/ABC framing. Phase out of coal exports is what should happen!
November 18, 2025 at 12:08 PM
The framing of this as a shock is so absurd to me.

They love trilemma almost as much as dunkelflaute. Which is funny because they always explain what each of these terms means every time they use them.

Energy people love nothing more than taking a simple concept, slapping a new word on it and bemoaning the complexity.
