That’s just about right — the axion dominates in the period post-BBN and pre-recombination, but we find only up to a decade of modified expansion can be accomodated.

Such enhancements can jumpstart the formation of dark matter haloes, and thus potentially also star formation and/or black hole formation -- which is especially interesting since initial JWST results suggest there are things we don't understand yet about both stars and black holes in early galaxies

This altered expansion history changes the growth of matter overdensities on scales corresponding to dwarf galaxies and below - we can get either a modest bump-like enhancement, or a bigger plateau-like feature, depending on the underlying axion potential
