Yes totally. I remember this when I lived in nyc and would read metro articles in nyt about people with 250k incomes talking about how they were “barely making it,” here I was with 35k/yr, surviving ok, and also recognizing the median nyc income! Idk it’s weird and frustrating.

It’s bafflingly out of touch with reality!!

We’re a household of 6, with a toddler in part time childcare ($1100/month), live on outskirts of a very expensive east coast city, make 30k less than this and we are fine. I would never ever say we were in poverty straits. The OP is really weird!

And mamdanis platform centered baby boxes for postnatal support and free childcare! He is actually trying to support parents. So ????

Sobs in USAID. I wish this were the case across the fed govt but no.

Yeah- she insists they won’t marry until the law is revised. They aren’t married in the subsequent books about other characters in the universe.

Oh oh I didn’t realize the essay was about the second book but it’s the same principle- the hero decides to fight with her. And they aren’t planning to marry! It’s a whole point, because they’ll continue their political activism- together… geez why is she misrepresenting these books so much?
December 1, 2025 at 12:48 AM
The second book in the Dunmore series, the suffragette heroine refuses to marry until the law on woman’s property is passed. The whole series is about women continuing their activism with supportive male partners!
December 1, 2025 at 12:35 AM
The reason Dunmore’s romance succeeds in the end is the hero renounces HIS political alignments to support the heroine and suffrage. This essay is pushing forward a version of the books and romance genre that she wants to argue, not at all what the books say (tho I haven’t read the first one!).

Right- it was a devastating time, where every single humanitarian expert in the USG was at odds with a handful of political leaders committed to the course they set out. I think a lot of this has been memory holed. Thanks for sticking up for USAID! Folks tried, resigned, etc etc. Nothing worked.

I really want to clarify that the Biden political decisions were completely against rank and file USAID employee/official/expert positions. If folks google this youll see a great deal of reporting about official dissent from USAID over Biden/Power Gaza policy www.reuters.com/world/over-1...

600,000 so far have died because they illegally killed USAID. Frustrated this wasn't even included in this overview! This is by far, by far, the most significant impact of DOGE.
