Just a little snip from the road trip guys. 🤗
Life’s been kicking my ass so it’s been slow going but it *is* going so I’m calling that a win. 🥳
Judy sits in the window, stealing the rays for herself. Her silhouette offers minimal reprieve from the harsh light, casting a small shadow over him, just a taste of relief that lands somewhere around his chin and neck. It’s the only spot on his body not drenched with sweat. Her glossy fur seems to glows with the sunlight behind her—black and shiny, almost like his own leather jacket. He’s no expert on cat moods (Frenchie’d led him to believe the two options are murder and manslaughter) but she looks pretty fuckin’ content on her perch. He kind of feels bad, knowing they aren't staying. Soon she will be forced to leave her spot and climb back into the carrier to get back on the road. He’s sure as fuck not volunteering to break the news to her, that’s Stede’s job. The passing thought of Stede finding himself on the business end of four tiny feet full of knives instinctively prompts him to twist around and confirm what his body already knows. He’s alone.

Stede is focused on his phone, rapidly tapping out something on the screen and paying little attention to the world around him. To her credit, Judy seems to be well-trained. He didn’t even realize that was a thing you could do with a cat. A wide ray of sunlight casts over a box in the back of the truck and she’s claimed it for herself. She’s happy enough to just wait there patiently, so Ed can probably push himself to do the same. There’s a clearing on the other side of the highway backed by an endless forest of jagged trees in their winter attire. Warning signs along their route have informed him to watch out for large animals they might encounter along the way. Moose, bears, elk, bison—maybe that’s why Judy is so good at staying close to Stede. She has to know she’s not the only predator out here. He watches the trees for movement, not sure if he’d be excited or terrified to see any of the previously warned beasts. There’s a thunk behind him and he jumps, his brain so focused on bears and wolves that for a moment he believes one may have sneakily evaded his watch. Stede stands by the bumper, hatch closed and Judy safely back in her crate. There’s a wearier expression on his face than when they’d parked. He’s forcing a smile, but his eyes are red and his cheeks are puffy and Ed’s not convinced it’s just from the cold.

Estranged childhood best friends embark on a long road trip when one of them decides to move back home. #ofmdfic
He waits awkwardly while Stede hugs Mary goodbye. Regardless of whatever weird thing is happening here, Ed does like her. Under different circumstances, they might have even been friends. He focuses on the mountains in the distances rather than the hushed, strained words three feet away. It’s March and there’s still plenty of snow on the ground. Even more in the distance. Do the mountains always have that much snow on them, year round? Murmurs of “I’ll text you at our first stop,” and “love you. You know that, right?” hang in the air, taunting him. Everything about this makes less and less sense with every passing moment. He tries not to listen, even when everything in his body is begging for more context. They’re going to be on the road for days on end—he will have his chance to ask. It has to come up. Mary breaks away from Stede and offers Ed a hug as well. Her body language is confusing, but the hug is sincere. “You’ll take turns driving, right?” she asks him. It doesn’t feel like she’s asking, though. He knows a command when he hears one.
