When I’m consulting w. teams on leading change for multilingual learners, I’m often just asking: Did you talk to so and so in your district? Are you having conversations w XYZ? Can you talk to XYZ about it? The connections in between elements in the system is where the real magic happens!

Hey, reading scientists: Most of the planet is multilingual. Time to stop making excuses for not having expertise in multilingual language development. After all, you are a reading researcher, right?

A riff on a quote from Trium:

If we ask teachers to meet new expectations in their work, how will our work as leaders need to change to effectively support them to make this shift? How does our own practice need to change to match these expectations? Don’t expect different results if different support is not offered.

A good day: our book in the wild; the science of language/literacy in action; reconnecting w. teacher I coached 10 years ago who built a literacy program into a school-wide focus; I facilitated discussion on making evidence-based decisions; we surfaced misconceptions still obscuring our path.

Making time for reflection and self-awareness IS the role of the leader/what a leader does. An organization is the reflection of the psychology of its leader(s).

Some of the answers you seek to serve newcomers are not at the lesson level. If you don’t look at your whole system, you won’t see what’s needed to accelerate language and literacy over time.

Please don’t blame your Tier 1 core instruction problem on your multilingual learners. Everyone can do better on that front, but if you haven’t even gotten the basics down, stop the scapegoating.

Hot off the press! This was a VERY tall order. How do you capture all the things for truly comprehensive literacy materials? I am so grateful I got to work on this assignment with a superstar working group.

Some folks were ready yesterday to do the work. Some folks are not ready now but that doesn’t mean they won’t be ready later. Some folks will never be ready. It’s not always about how hard you try.

We can’t PD our way out of an equity problem (i.e. multilingual learner equity, literacy justice, linguistic and cultural liberation) because it’s a system-level issue, not just an instructional one.
