My heart is heavy with sadness from senseless murders — Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, Iryna Zarutska, and Charlie Kirk — and school shootings last month in Minneapolis and today in Colorado.

The assassination of Charlie Kirk is despicable.

This cannot be the direction we’re going as a country. This downward spiral of violence must stop.

My prayers are with Charlie - for his life, his family, and his friends.

I am deeply disturbed by the shooting in Utah. Doug and I send our prayers to Charlie Kirk and his family.

Let me be clear: Political violence has no place in America. I condemn this act, and we all must work together to ensure this does not lead to more violence.

Setting aside the substance of Charlie Kirk's opinions, his basic right to express himself freely in a liberal society is one we should all hold dear. When we lose rights like that to fear of political violence, we are all poorer for it.

Partisan rigging of North Carolina's state legislature is so pervasive that even when a majority of residents statewide voted for Democrats in the 2024 elections, Republicans still held on to 2/3rds of seats in the NC State Senate, and are just 1 seat shy of 2/3rds in the State House.

BOOM! The North Carolina State House just unanimously (107 to 0) passed a ban on parking minimums in new developments statewide.

This is powerful and bipartisan pro-housing reform that will make it easier to expand multifamily housing. Great work.

This is pretty wild: the loonytoon who sent death threats to North Carolina lawmakers over a proposed shrimp trawling ban was the Republican nominee for State Auditor in 2020. He almost won!

North Carolina's state legislature is a pay-to-play arena where special interests pay an "entry fee" to get meetings with policymakers.

The decision by Governor @joshsteinnc.bsky.social to veto Republicans' reckless permitless carry bill was a double-win: good, common-sense policy that creates good politics.

Thank you, Governor Stein, for standing up for common sense! 👍

GOOD NEWS: today, @ncgovernor.bsky.social took courageous action to ❌ VETO 3 awful bills from our state legislature:
- permitless carry
- anti-immigrant scaremongering
- unfunded mandates on law enforcement

This weekend, NCians will all be a little safer. Nice!

This is Christian Nationalism. What Trump and his administration are doing is dangerous to both the nation AND the Christian faith. It perverts the Bible and the constitution. It must be stopped.

Using a book about a poor man of color from the Middle East who fled persecution & was displaced as a refugee to justify turning asylum-seekers away & “mass deportation” shows you that it was never about Jesus. It was always about control, power, & bigotry.

It is not normal to not care about other people. It is not normal to see people suffering & just look away. Especially when those in power try to dehumanize certain groups, we have to resist the notion that anyone else’s suffering is somehow less important than our own. It will never be true.

Turning people away at the border isn’t Christ-like. Jesus welcomes all, loves all, & commanded us to do the same. This is shameful.

If you see an asylum-seeker in distress & your first thought isn’t, “how can I be of assistance to this person, as a fellow human being?”, your humanity is severely tainted. We owe each other care, simply by virtue of being human. The day we lose sight of that is the day we’ve lost everything.
