Dear Friends: In my years of working towards strengthening our Jewish community I have learned – usually the hard way – that the rush that comes with being sharp-tongued can be destructive to the very world that I am trying to create. The urgencies of the present moment, what we need in terms of wisdom and what we need from our leaders, can create perverse incentives in getting all of us to speak quickly and urgently; and what results is not often wisdom, and ultimately not leadership. Last week I wrote an angry Facebook post which was more intemperate in tone and less cautious than I like to write. I was responding to the ADL’s announcement of a “Mamdani Tracker,” to monitor the mayor-elect amidst this rising climate of antisemitism and Mamdani’s own pronounced anti-Zionism which became even more emboldened in his rise to power. I was angry because I have been extremely frustrated by what I perceive as the ADL’s abandonment of a broader civil rights agenda and towards a more narrow focus on the antisemitism of the left; because I think Mamdani is getting a treatment that has not been applied equally to antisemites on the right and in the halls of power; because I recognize that there are a great many people in our community who support Mamdani, and I am scared that we are doing irreparable harm to our community by isolating this particular politician as a site for litmus testing; and because I think the more prudent way forward is for the ADL to congratulate the mayor, reiterate their commitments and their responsibilities, and then to do the work for which they were formed: protecting civil rights for all, including Jews. All substance, no shtick. In my post, however, I connected the ADL’s announcement to the anti-Muslim sentiment that also appeared from the Cuomo campaign and from some anti-Mamdani activists, and I insinuated that the ADL’s approach (and Jonathan Greenblatt in particular) was motivated by that same animus.
