Micro blogging Sounders FC and MLS
Two things can be true:
- Lloris has historically had a bad time at BC Place so comes off a complainer
- His comments 100% needed to be said.

If we really engage with it:
- Both teams were slipping way too much
- VAN were down to 9 men at the end because of the turf monster

It was conspicuous.

Buttoning up the 2025 MLS Season and including Round 1 minutes, Sounders ended on 69% of their minutes played by Americans. Crazy to consider that based on what we know so far about long term injuries and declined options and players waiting in the wings this number could rise again next year...

One of the untold stories of the Brian Schmetzer-era Sounders is the degree to which he has had to chop-and-change lineups in the regular season and still peaks 50 points almost every year. Dusted off one of my slightly busy pandemic era graphics to help show 2025's contrast 2024 & 2023.

Paul Rothrock’s arc over the last year for Sounders is something else. From a nominal backup in Feb to national pundits now advocating for him to start a playoff game over a former DP who got two assists in the previous game.

MNUFC has been stingy in the first 45' during the MLS regular season. Sounders have also been stingy to start except for a strangely shaky final 15' of the first half. With teams starting to tire ending that first half is also MNUFC's strongest scoring period. Maybe the most important 15' tomorrow?

Reflected in the rank of their opponent's xPoints compared to the other games across that team's season Sounders kept other teams quiet down the stretch. Contrast to SD earning their best xPoints of 2025 and Salt Lake their 2nd best and MINN still somehow coming away with 3 points. 😖

In a week where illegal sports betting is in the headlines encourage reading up on the how and why of the availability report rules in NFL. From “Interference” by Dan E. Moldea:

In a monster “What We Learned This Week” @elrolonw.bsky.social goes all in on my bet about this team at the start of the season. Niko knows what’s up!

Looking at ASA's shot patterns to review Minnesota's boogey man status on set pieces. Definitely something there, but Chicago should be just as worrying on efficiency and Vancouver & Philly's sheer shot volume in these areas presents its own challenge.

The Loons did not close the season particularly strong and from an xPoints perspective got pretty lucky three times in a month. Sounders on the other hand finished the year logging at least 2 xPoints in seven of their last ten games. That 7 games was only matched by Vancouver among playoff teams.

This year in the West securing the home game for the playoffs was less about cementing one’s own advantage at home and rather denying Sounders their advantage at home. Especially true on the Seattle’s side of the bracket.

Have to imagine the Sounders beat reporters who Brian knows very well were not expecting the "hair dryer treatment" last night over Zoom after recovering an away win through adversity. When you see this kind of competitive fire from Schmetz you start to understand where those trophies come from.

Brian’s presser was SUR-LY. Probably because nobody asked him about trusting Danny Leyva who’s been prowling a smaller dimension home field for years now. 103 Touches. 6/7 on Ground duels. A corner kick assist. Agree with the FotMob assessment here, Danny put in A SHIFT.

Jamon's xy comparison has Sounders points total looking about as expected. But looking at win rate for what the ASA algo thinks are Sounders strongest games, when they log 2 xPoints and above, this team's win rate is woeful compared to the League and much worse compared to 2024.

Used to be this thing on the other site where you’d encounter an uncanny convergence in the cultural algorithm. Feels like that’s starting to happen here and it’s even weirder because there isn’t an algorithm. Just my follow list. Maybe this place does have the Juice.

Happy to report Sounders are 3rd in MLS on Live Pass Goal Creation in 2025 and the fullback core dramatically improving their contribution. Given how many situations have inexplicably gone sideways in the 18 or a goalie had their game of the season this number should probably be even higher.

Definitely reasonable to feel half-hearted about Sounders limping into the playoffs. On the other hand the core fundamentals of finding your best shooters in high value areas has never been better. We should think about this team as a different animal than past post-seasons. (Via fbref)

Rounding out Hat Trick Week: It took just three games in MLS for Thomas Muller to score 3 in a single sitting. Just six games for Son. Bouanga also bagged his first hat trick in his sixth game for LAFC. Timbers however have yet to log a hattie in league play in their entire 15 year history.

Interesting to see how Jesús Ferreira has removed the cruft from his shooting game with Sounders. To @ari.lobbingscorchers.com point on the latest @lobbingscorchers.com that when Albert returns, while on paper Jesús will be on the right, in practice his output looks like a second 10.
