Another MilSF it reminds me of is The Mote in God's Eye, a book (among other things) about the undesirability of sequestering political and technical questions, even if it were (in)humanly possible to do so.

I haven't read much Honor Harrington, but I get the idea that at any moment anyone could say "I think we should go back to the gold standard," be met with general agreement, and be compeltely in character.

The Marquis open up a new political space for Star Trek, which the DS9 writers completely missed then brought back Thomas Riker to do an inferior copy of The Wounded. (I don't get why people love DS9 so much.)

The Wounded is a very good episode. The Marquis was good by DS9 standards. The Cardassians resemble pre-flanderisation Klingons, which are much more interesting, and Marquis, as extremists, introduce a new dimension to the Federation.
