Saw something powerful at the Toronto airport duty free: cigarette boxes showing the brutal truth — cancer, heart disease, and more.

This is public health in action. Sometimes the hardest images tell the most important stories.

As a surgeon, could not agree more with these reflections that Pope Francis wrote this in the Hospital.

They have witnessed far more sincere kisses than those in airports...

Just down the street from the NRA convention in Atlanta, I spoke to a room full of clinicians yesterday about one of the most pressing public health issues we face: firearm violence.

While others gathered to discuss rights, we took another “route” and focused on responsibilities—and saving lives.

Most school shooters don’t get guns from strangers. They get them from home.

We can change that—by locking up firearms and demanding safe storage.

Because one locked gun could save a life. #ProtectOurChildren

Do you own a gun?

✅ Lock It Up.
✅ Store Ammo Separately.

Kicking off @facs.org #ACSLAS25 with powerful words from Dean Elster on what it truly means to “Lead Change.”

A reminder that leadership in surgery goes beyond the OR — it’s about vision, courage, and the commitment to shape a better future for our patients, teams, and profession.

🚨 BREAKING: The Trump admin removed the 2024 Surgeon General’s advisory declaring Firearm violence a public health crisis from the HHS website.

This is a dangerous step backward. Firearm violence is a public health crisis—erasing it won’t change the reality we see in our hospitals and communities.

Over 6 million undocumented workers contribute to industries that keep America running, yet many face uncertainty as policies target them.

Losing their labor could harm families and entire sectors. It's time for immigration reform that values their humanity and economic impact.
