I have been thinking about this tweet from Katharine Birbalsingh for a while, where she says how eloquent Zia Yusuf is. It doesn’t feel great to me… 🪏🪏

As an artist, this episode means a lot to me. Creativity should be central in education. I worry that a narrow focus on traditional knowledge won’t help young people challenge the system. I’m also concerned about the lack of play – we saw young people being told off for not playing “professionally”.
🎭📷🤸 Ep on Creativity at Michaela out now

Does silence, no excuses, and this highly punitive environment help Michaela students to feel safe enough to explore, or limit their creativity?

We started a podcast to deepen discussion around traditional vs progressive education and no-excuses discipline.

We focus on Katharine Birbalsingh’s Michaela Community School as a starting point for a broader conversation on education.

See below for more info on Ep 1 - Learning
Ep1 (Learning) of Graded goes inside Katharine Birbalsingh's Michaela to unpack its routines, small-c conservative values, + curriculum.

Young people face forwards all lesson. Every hand up.

Is this love of learning – or immaculate compliance?
