The danger is when a person accepts things passively. In reality the person is the very cause of the problem. To think of oneself as a patient or a subject is to surrender one's own will.

I took my degree in cognitive psychology the same year that movie came out. It depicted contemporary ECT accurately. I had hoped the practice had been abandoned because we don't really know what we're doing when we subject the brain to unnatural electrical currents. Atomic-flyswatter therapy, yuck.

I agree with Bones McCoy: medicine in this era is primitive and sadistic.
Were we to perform ECT on a computer, we'd likely have to buy new one, yet we blithely perform it on ourselves. And now under general anesthesia? A decade ago, that was producing ~2% fatalities … statistically acceptable but….

They can't seriously be performing ECT in this day and age! It was already deprecated back in the time of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

I am too old to have ambitions but I still have a vote to cast. I won't cast it for politicians who take money from special interests because they betray their own voters; I will not cast it for politicians who promote genocide because they don't belong in polite society at all.

The thesis was not "no need to care about politics--both parties are evil". The thesis was that both parties have been coöpted to enslave us hoi polloi. We might very well have to create few new parties because these two are too corrupt to change – it can be done, Mexico just did it.
