Rereading Kindred for Bookclub and damn I forgot how much I love Octavia Butlers writing & how brutal this novel is

Trying to decide between Parable of The Sower and Kindred for bookclub. Both are banging books, but I'm just not sure which to put forward for our next read

Just realised I referred to Anglian Water as Anglican water; that's being put down to dehydration induced delirium.

In other news, we have water now. Big win
January 27, 2026 at 10:56 PM
Anglican Water turned off around water around 12 today, with little notice. Said it'd be back on a 1800.

Workers left at 1700. The time we'd get water back updated to 2200.

It is now 2125. No workers can be seen. So, unless they're holding back our water for a laugh, I doubt I'm getting it back.

Ever since I got an E-Reader for Christmas, I've been reading so much more than I usually would; it's wild.

Get more anxiety asking people to read my query letter and synopsis than I do shooting short stories off to magazines lol

Query Letter and synopsis wrote. Now, time to wait for beta feedback on the book...
January 22, 2026 at 4:55 PM
Finally finished the novel I started back during my MA in 2022 or so. Like, it's almost ready for query, just waiting on Beta's to say it's ready😎

Now to write the synopsis and query letter...

Badenoch reading Vimes' Boots Theory of Socio-economic Unfairness and thinking how much more economic growth comes from making poorer people buy cheap boots over and over

My biggest accomplishment of the past few weeks is getting a "high-tier" rejection from Asimovs.

Let's go. Progress is being made!

Trying to decide when a short story is ready for the submissions gauntlet is harrowing
May 27, 2025 at 10:42 PM
Wrote a short story last month that has gone through atleast 4 drafts and I havent done anything with it yet.

Not touched it since I wrapped up last draft so need to give it a read and see if i still like it lmao

Today has been productive. Finished the draft to a short story, got a rough plan for a second, and an idea for a third.

They'll keep me productive for a little while.

Feel like I've been writing with blinders on for past few months. Forgot that I can literally write about whatever the hell I want, and remembering that is pretty liberating

I've been working on my main WIP since mid 2022--I think. Between graduating my MA and starting work I've not been able to put as many hours into it as I want.

However, one benefit of taking so long whilst continuing to read, write short stories etc is it does a good job of showing my growth

My biggest regret is that, before leaving my home town for greener pastures, I never popped over to Wigan for a proper Wigan Slappy.

And popping a frozen pie in a barm seems like it would do a disservice to the greatest culinary innovation of north-west england

I love writing short stories ngl, but I worry I'm locking in on them as a way to procrastinate editing my novel 🙃

Love it when inspiration strikes and I can enter a flow state of writing
