I've been working on some fun embroidery this week since I wont have access to the machines for much longer.

This design is fitting, as so many things seem to be blowing up in my face lately 💣

A top view of a handmade polymer clay Monarch butterfly. I attempted to do a color gradient on the wings, transitioning the orange to a red on the top wing, and to a yellow on the bottom wing. Being that the black lines on the wings are thick instead of thin (as they appear on the males), and also the absence of pheromone glands on the bottom wing which appear as black spots, we can tell that this is a female. And angled view if the butterfly on my fingertip to show the curvature of the wings. Another slightly less shallow angle view of the butterfly at a 3/4 view angle.

Here's a throwback to a piece I created after recovering from a two year battle with depression when I first moved to California to pursue my dreams. It was then I discovered that my art could be used to not only to express, but to expel the growing darkness from my psyche.

This went remarkably well! Though I struggled with the top wing a bit.

I scaled it down to 2" and 1.5", but I think I want to try taking a piece down to 1" and see what I get.
The inside of my Butterfly cane reduced down to 2" and 1.5" tall. The bottom wing is upside down but because of symmetry I can straighten it out when I slice the canes then I can flip things around.

This weekend's challenge: to reduce my first irregular clay "cane" 🦋

(A "cane" is a design created large with the intention of reducing down and stretching it out so you can cut it into slices)
A top view of a large polymer clay butterfly wing. The rich fall colors and patterning are supposed to resemble that of a Monarch Butterfly. This angled view shows the side and the depth of the cane. With any luck, and a bit of skill, I will be able to pinch and roll this down to a reasonable size for magnets for pendants. The smaller you reduce the cane, the longer it gets but the smaller your details get as well.

Wrapping up for the day. This is taking much longer than I anticipated. But it will be well worth the effort.
A work in progress shot of a polymer clay Butterfly cane. This is pair of Monarch Butterfly wings. The top wing is nearly complete, as I move the the second row of white dots on the wing's edge. After that I have to finalize the black border, and then move on the the white speckles on the bottom wing.
