(This is by the by but I feel like there’s a universe where the knitting show had figured out how to give them enough time to make objects with normal sized yarn and a steeking challenge would be incredibly tense and exciting like when they have to do sugar work on bake off or whatever)

No. My impression of the episode is that the judges were nervous about steeking bc the yarn was so bulky, not because they oppose the technique at any time. (Most fair isle is done with thin yarn; this was huge.) But the people taking offense seem to be taking their statements as a general affront

I was already very excited for this show bc I am a giant nerd who only likes tv shows with extremely low stakes but there are no words for how excited I am that it’s now producing real life knitting drama
