contradiction by discarding the principle? As Hiroshima Mayor Matsui observes, Japan should focus on diplomacy & building trust rather than heightening tensions by explicitly relying on US nuclear deterrence.

That said, China's punitive response also endangers trade relations with Japan, which are critical to maintaining peace.
