Oh it was sooo much better than lemon-flavored. Indescribably fragrant and delicious

Metaphors are out of favor w/some ppl these days, but I say there are good ones and bad ones. The latter, i.e. mere turns of phrase, can easily be as misleading as clarifying. But good metaphors, w/many one-to-one connections, illuminate, and don't necessarily fix meaning at all

Loved the explanation of the stall (and the post it's a digression from). More fun with metaphors here.
Great culture can save lives. Literally.

Amazing letter in today’s @thetimes.com about Tom Stoppard

People like Jeffries are really stuck, ideologically, not to mention that he's not a very interesting person. Freakonomics is the day before yesterday's bullshit, not today's.

'George Elliot' & Ayn Rand both wrote novels with man/woman relationships in them. One's the greatest novelist in English, & the other is one of the worst of the famous ones (and they're both women so another genre! "Women writers"). To paraphrase a famous dada, "everyone their own algo".

Some ppl do believe in genre as a quality, unfortunately. Some even define their lifestyle by a genre - ie a generic person. But none of it makes any human sense if you think about it.

I'm sure there is not a single time I have been persuaded to read any book or listen to any music via algorithmic 'suggestion', b/c I know that only the quality of the work matters, not the 'genre' in itself. Algos can't judge quality. They can only attempt to push genre - a fake, marketing category

One of my favorites too, and I didn't know Stoppard worked on it. RIP

GOP can't really bring back the 1890s and early 20th c, and worse. But they will try
