By contrast, today’s EU created its Single Market 𝗯𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲, 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘂𝘀.

That’s what makes it one of history’s most remarkable peace projects.

Yes, but the big difference is that countries volunteer to join the EU. Unlike the Roman Empire, the Nazi Empire or the Soviet Empire, they are not bludgeoned or forced to join. Today most of Europe is in the EU or wants to be.

For centuries, yes, but those centuries included 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲. The EU was created as a new peace project after 1945, and Britain thrived inside it. We’re not thriving outside.
