Having had to explain to UK govt that I might have been born in Malta & not appear on their computer until 1970s, but I'd been living in the UK (mostly) since then, & paying tax - and still having to send a notarised copy of my UK passport to prove my right of residence didn't fill me with joy.

It was brilliant...

Although, accurate.

Wonderful. Congratulations on the deal, and they're lucky to get you.

Okay, that works...

Loved Sonia & Sunny, but proper 19th c novel.
V long, many characters, comic interludes, etc

As for winner. This from friend's review!

'This middle portion of the novel is a bit like Jilly Cooper, if Jilly Cooper were to divest herself of all her humour, charm, puckish fun and joie-de-vivre.'

The local cafe now brings mustard. Although, it's American and fluorescent yellow orange unless you ask for the real stuff.

Always!

I can only assume there's a small, possibly mythical gang of tomato sauce deviants roaming Derbyshire to whom such offerings must be made.

Where is it. Lived there in my teens, but it's been a *long* time...

Have fun. I'd envy you, but I'm in Oslo that weekend dragging Sam round the Munch Museet for as long as she can stand!

:-) It was a great match, in its very weird way. But I really thought we might win, while being grateful it wasn't a bigger loss, so yes...!

Wonderful. Philosophical honesty and accuracy meet.

Smash off with a sledge hammer so the book doesn't overturn in the bath... (weirdly, my father regarded doing this for real, and smashing ice from the bridge and railings as one of the high points of his life.)

Yeah. Twenty something years after the boy grew up and left home, my working day is still defined by patterns set getting him to school, getting him back, feeding him, and homework and bed.

Absolutely no reason why they should be. Just don't know how to unlearn.

That's Adrian!

It's a hard one. A couple of the best books I've read recently were beyond that, but still a major publisher taking a risk. And, obviously, a couple of others were barely longer than 50k.

I've been asking myself that... :-)

Thanks Tom. It could probably come down another 10-20k if someone put me on a rack...
