Benthic is the result of a 6-month co-design process informed by co-author Daniel Hajas’s expertise as a blind HCI researcher. In our study with 15 blind participants, Benthic supported flexible exploration and mental model formation.

Where previous tools focus on tree or graph structures for navigating graphics, Benthic uses hypergraphs to capture both hierarchical and adjacent relationships in a unified structure. This enables perceptually congruent navigation that mirrors how sighted readers explore graphics.

I'm extremely excited about this symposium, which brings together people from across the university to share knowledge about disability inclusion. This is a new initiative, in its second year, by the College of Arts and Sciences' Office for Access & Community Engagement (ACE).
