I don't think so (I was there at the time and I think we would have noticed a BBC crew!) but Rudkin went to KES and it's clearly the inspiration for those scenes.

For me personally, one of the most 'uncanny' things about Penda's Fen is how closely it matches the landscape of my own childhood - King Edward's School, Longbridge, Worcestershire. The hero is a prototype Benjamin Trotter, even though I didn't see it until long after writing The Rotters' Club.

Indeed! Another nearby resident is Robert Fripp, who did his own bit for musical folk horror in the early 70s.

Andrew Davies's style is so distinctive that he could adapt The Gulag Archipelago and it would still be 'mischievously sexy'.

The score is actually almost continuous, and very loud at times. But you're right - what's great is that it operates at an oblique angle to what you're seeing on screen, rather than constantly nudging the audience in the obvious emotional direction.

And I like some of his tunes so much that I named a novel after one of them.

Yes - when I went to see Gary Burton and Chick Corea at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in 1983 (?) I found myself sitting next to Gibbs and Bill Oddie.
