I had been reading Steel Ball Run since my student days. When I saw the auditions were happening, I thought, 'It's finally here, the time has finally come.' I went into the audition feeling half pressure and half excitement. I actually auditioned for several roles besides Gyro, so I reread the original work from each character's perspective. I think I must have ran through the race about three or four times that way, so it was a fairly long journey, but I'm so happy to finally have reached the starting line. The role of Gyro Zeppeli is extremely difficult. He's the kind of character who changes his expression according to each scene and situation, so just when I think I've grasped him, he slips away. It’s fairly challenging to play him, but he also has his own moments of doubt and scenes where you can feel his humanity. He's like a mentor figure to Johnny, but there are also many things he learns from Johnny. So I feel it's a very rewarding role to play. I'm really the type to get bored easily. This job of acting is the one I've continued the longest. To me, it's like a journey I've set out on. From the moment I aspired to this endless pursuit of expression called acting, it honestly felt like I had been thrown into a desert. I don't know where I'm heading, there's no destination, and yet I still have to keep moving forward. But in the midst of it, there's an occasional oasis. It's moments when I encounter a work such as this and realize that this journey wasn't a mistake. As Sakata-kun mentioned earlier, our manager is truly passionate about JoJo. When I was auditioning, the two of us went back and forth, saying things like, 'Maybe it should be more like this,' directing each other as if our lives depended on it. That's how I was able to grasp this role and this work. I feel as though that person was waving a flag and guiding me forward. When there are people like that, I feel glad that I continued this job.

The first round was a tape audition. My manager is a huge JoJo fan. I myself had read Steel Ball Run thoroughly in preparation before that audition, but with my manager’s advice I felt more reassured going into it. It really helped to have such a big fan watching over me, and I felt I was able to polish my performance more. When I advanced to the studio audition, there was that 'Ora Ora' line. I thought it was incredibly important. So, from the moment I was told I had passed to the studio audition, I was constantly muttering it, from when I woke up to when I was in the bath. I thought, 'I have to get this ‘Ora Ora’ part right.' Thanks to that, I left the studio audition feeling confident that I had at least nailed that part the best. I feel that Johnny is a very human character. He shows things like the weaker sides of people, even a bit of patheticness at times, and I think that's part of his appeal. Despite showing that weakness, he's a character who still manages to rise again. That's the kind of person I see him as, and that's what I strive to express in my performance. There have been a lot of setbacks in my life up until now... and also running away from difficult things or getting discouraged. But at the very last moment... my way of thinking does a complete 180. I feel like 'If I'm going to fail here anyway, I might as well fall forward.' There are a lot of pressures, but I think the only thing I can do is to squeeze out my soul in front of the microphone and produce my voice, so I'm trying not to think about anything else and do my best.

Guile's new EX Color in Street Fighter 6 is based on Jean Pierre Polnareff, adding onto the numerous JoJo references in Guile's design.

In Street Fighter II, he was modeled after Polnareff and Stroheim. His name originates from J. Geil due to a mix up from the staff.
