Hegseth’s posters prompted a letter to the paper from a philosophy major named Dan Wachtell. Labeling the Tory staff “misogynists,” Wachtell cut straight to the gonads, lamenting that Hegseth and his ilk didn’t watch the play with their ears and eyes open: “Who knows what then might have happened? The painting shows Prometheus, a Titan who was punished by Zeus for stealing fire and giving it to humanity. His punishment was being chained to a rock while an eagle ate his liver every day. Because his liver regenerated overnight, the torment repeated endlessly—he literally got a “fresh start” each morning, only to suffer again. The text “EVERY DAY IS A FRESH START” is usually used in a motivational or positive sense. But here it’s ironic: Prometheus does get a fresh start each day, but it only means another round of agony. So the humor comes from the mismatch between the cheerful motivational quote and the grim reality of Prometheus’ eternal suffering. It’s a satirical take on toxic positivity—sometimes a “fresh start” isn’t necessarily a good thing.
