Earth Sciences graduate. But studying for a second degree in History with the OU. Love birdwatching, getting outdoors or snuggling indoors with a good book.

Two incredible photos from Clive Oppenheimer’s book Mountains of Fire showing the same scene before and after a volcanic eruption on Montserrat. The church was obliterated by nuées ardentes (part of a pyroclastic flow).

Impressive venue in St Andrews for today’s excellent discussion between @laurapoppick.bsky.social and Marcia Bjornerud on their views on geosciences including in education.

Salmon have returned to the Levern Water in East Renfrewshire following the removal of two weirs. The river is also being allowed to follow a more natural course to help with flood management. www.eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk/article/7573...

In a previous job, I helped organise several art exhibitions of young people's work. I've just discovered that the BBC hosted a small gallery of some of the work that was exhibited. news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pict...

I love these proposals for Bridge Street in Glasgow. It reminds me of Tottenham Court Road in London.

It'll be outside the scope of the development, but it would have been good to see Bridge Street station get a facelift and improve accessibility of it. www.urbanrealm.com/news/11687/%...

Look at this, it’s a quarry designed to give access to fossils rather than being for access to minerals or rocks.

This quarry is in Luoping County, China, and the photo is in Michael J. Benton’s book Extinctions. #palaeontology #geology

The horse chestnut tree across the road has decided enough is enough and it’s nearly ready for winter. The sycamore to the right is still hanging in there, but the ash (I think) is also shedding its leaves a lot now too.

I’ve got a few generic bird guides including the Collins, but I treated myself to something a bit more specialised today: Gulls of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. I’ve been wanting to improve my gull ID skills for ages, and this begins now. #birding

I really enjoyed Jane Smith’s book Community. From Peregrines and Water Voles in Glasgow, to seagrass off a Scottish island, Fulmars in St Kilda and Beavers in Argyll, this book explores the wildlife, and the people helping the wildlife, on Scotland’s west coast.

Hey @ougeolsoc.bsky.social Ian Gass gets a namecheck in this book Geopedia by Marcia Bjornerud.

For me it’s just a name associated with OU Earth Science so it was great to learn a bit about him, in this case under the term ophiolite.

Rachel Carson's book The Sea Around Us was published in 1951, and it's interesting reading it with a knowledge of plate tectonics, because she was writing at a time before most of the evidence for plate tectonics was published. She hints at seafloor spreading, but only so much as it's an idea.

Wow just saw a Grey Heron catching a tiddler and then five seconds later it caught a whopping big Pike that was as long as the heron’s neck! Here’s a massively zoomed in photo on my phone. #BirdingScotland

I’ve been making good progress through my existing to read pile of books, but I thought today was worth adding some new books to the pile.

Soon I’ll be delving deep under the ocean and visiting the Arctic (the latter with Barry Lopez whose book I’ve wanted to read for years). #books

I was not expecting to receive my prints from the @scottishgeology.bsky.social quite so soon, but here they are.

The Oct 2025 issue of BBC Wildlife has an article on the Swallow-tailed Gull of the Galápagos Islands. This is a nocturnal gull feeding on squid and fish that surface at night. The gull might even use echolocation to hunt. #SuperSeabirdSunday
