Congrats to Johnny Franco, the Giants’ new head groundskeeper, replacing Greg Elliott, who had the job the past 18 years including three WS championships (and many Gold Gloves) and now is Earthquakes’ lead groundskeeper. Franco was one of Elliott’s two full-time assistants.

Giants’ spring training schedule is fan friendly: 13 road exhibitions and 16 at home including 10 on weekends. Though, yes, it’s usually cheaper away from Scottsdale. March 3 vs. Team USA. Home game for Webb? Giants-A’s used to be big deal in AZ, hardly a thing anymore.

Padres seem to win every offseason and every trade deadline but don't win in October and then bring in new managers every two years. Maybe they should try what the Rangers successfully tried three years ago and hire Bruce Bochy, who has experience turning teams into champions.

RIP to a baseball lifer/icon, Sandy Alomar Sr., father of Roberto and Sandy Jr. Beyond 15-year playing career, he served as long-time coach and in '80s was together with sons in Padres organization, always extremely helpful and kind to this scribe for which I was always grateful.
