Assembly of First Nations Special Chiefs Assembly opened this week with a blunt assessment from National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak, who told delegates the federal government had fallen short on key promises.

Canada was very present at the AFN Special Chiefs Assembly, but gets mixed review from chiefs on its record so far.

AFN Chiefs share multiple issues because of climate change that affect their communities with wild fires, flooding, & loss of homes. IMPACTS: housing shortages & severe home INSECURITY directly affecting the most vulnerable women & children, community health, & safety. @afnnetwork.bsky.social

Hung out with my niece Anissa in Ottawa (AFN) talking about politics. She is an elected Counculor in our L'nu community of Millbrook. She has a bright future in leadership roles in any area of politics.

In Ottawa for the AFN Special Assembly as part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ Council. In the picture is Marcel from Manitoba. We have a tight schedule of activities, but all in support of working moving forward - never straight.

And just like that, I meet up with a friend whom I haven't seen since my Canada World Youth (Canada - Costa Rica) days in 1990 in Nairobi. Yesi (Tico)and I were in the same city at the same time in Kenya, so we took the opportunity to catch up.

It's my 1st time in Kenya & it's AMAZING! I visited the National Museum of Kenya to learn about culture & history. I saw a replica of Lucy, our earliest human-like relative. Lucy walked upright 3.2 million years ago. I'm here as a delegate of Canada & Dal U at ACU Congress.

Editing sweep for the 3rd time before uploading the paper for publication, due tomorrow! This paper is about Etuaptmumk for conducting Two-Spirit research. It's a fresh approach by analyzing the sources of L'nu knowledge as the strength of the Etuaptmumk with Eurocentric perspectives.

Ashley Julien (Sipekne’katik) and spouse Izzy Rikihana Maori) co-presented on Ash's PhD study. They shared their work on conducting podcasts as part of interviewing the current community language-speakers discussing how trauma can negatively impact language learning, while speaking heals them.

A special Peruvian friend gifted me this tapestry, which I had altered so it could be hung with a curtain rod. I think it's perfect for our office space at the Office of Vice Provost, Indigenous Relations at Dalhousie University.

My cousin Starr Paul presented on language nests whereby toddlers learn to speak their first language (not Enlish/French) as Maori in New Zealand. She proposes that the nests would be an excellent model for Mi'kmaw re-generation of 1st language speakers in Eskasoni. I love it!

I'm finalizing my 3rd paper of my manuscript-based dissertation with one more great edit...and then I'll put it down for a week. I'll go at it once again for a final sweep before it goes into the draft dissertation. And it's starting to look like the finish line is looking closer than ever!
