There's learning about the boundaries of their existence and the effects of their actions. Perhaps if we allow the AI to learn language at the same time is doing the physical stuff, they would have a better understanding of the correlation? Just an idea.

Part of the way they train AI for physical stuff is in a physical environment and I don't know if you call it play or not, but there is a fair amount of random / exploration going on.

Not entirely disagreeing with you. But, devil's advocate, children are learning in multiple categories simultaneously. They aren't compartmentalized into just language box. If they were, they might be more like what AI does.
