An IT angle? A math paper in 1976 had a Fortran segment. A few years later the school I taught at was given a computer and the principal decided my Fortran was near enough to BASIC - and away I went. 8 bit computing in the 80s was fun.

I bombed out in University Chemistry. Family friend said there was a shortage of Woodwork teachers so off I went to TCol. Did a carpentry apprenticeship on the side. Taught Metalwork 9y then Science & Computer Studies 11y then got a BSc in Physics at 51. Became a Survey administrator 13y. Ret.

Not sure if he’s tried/trying the same in NZ which, 14 years ago when he became a citizen here as well, he thought we represented his vision of the future.

Kiwi here. Yes, it’s as important as voting. Been called several times, my boss wrote in to get me off one and I wrote in about deferring another. Still served twice. 1st involved a drug dealer and that was a good introduction into the system. 2nd, discharged when witness attacked the defendant.🙄
