Why USC students who want to be doctors and engineers are minoring in comedy
Since 2015, USC's School of Dramatic Arts has offered a minor in comedy performance, but it isn't just aspiring entertainers who pursue the work.

I just remembered something from my childhood: on a manual typewriter, the carriage return lever is on the typist's left side. For the past 25 years, I have been typing wrong in improv scenes.

Harry Chapin's Cats in the Cradle, but it's about the father not letting his learner's-permit son do the driving.

I think we all know this, but just to repeat: If you go into the Conclave a Pope, you come out a Cardinal. I don't endorse wagering on the matter, but the front-runners usually fade after the first round.

Folks -- it's 5:13pm local time and I'm fine with the amount of daylight. Do we really need to turn our clocks forward?

Taking a break from our nation's deep troubles... the Shakey's Pizza at Olympic/San Vicente/Fairfax has closed. Site will be redeveloped. Into what? I'm hoping they build a building there rather than turn the site into another street. That intersection has enough streets as it is!

I'm watching the movie Big Eyes on KCET right now. They're in court, having a paint-off, to prove who is the real artist. Feels like a Mr. Show sketch. I love it.

My parents' generation experienced the Super Bowl like this: A) it didn't exist; then, B) it was a wacky new thing; then, C) it became an essential part of our lives.
The Pop-Tart Bowl is somewhere between B and C right now.

A friend gave us Phil Spector's Christmas Album. So generous! And it's all the excuse I need to recount my story about meeting Phil Spector at a Christmas party in 1995.

Tonight, I did the best Caroling of my life. If you were there, you heard it: each "la" that I sang in "Fa la la la la, la la la la!" got it its own moment. And each one of those "la's" now lives on in the memories of those caroled to.

Attention, Los Angeles radio listeners: my sources say KOST 103.5 flips to Christmas music at 8am tomorrow morning. My faith tradition celebrates Christmas in late December (on 12/25) and I take no pleasure in reporting this too-early merrymaking.

I received more texts about the closing of the Pea Soup Andersen's in Buellton than I did about Bill Belichick being fired. a) Belichick separating from the Patriots was less of a surprise; b) the Pats don't play again until August pre-season, Buellton needs pea soup TODAY.

I have received some great Christmas Cards over the years. @kevinmcshane.org might have sent me the greatest card this year. It's not about the money, but... there were two $1 bills in it. #blessed.
