Why isn’t biannual like bicentennial…every two years and every 200 years? Seems like just error to use biannual to mean semiannual. (Of course, that’s not how language works so what was once an error might not be any longer)

Not sure about you, Susan, but I learned to read with ITA. Then midway through first grade, I remember having to relearn with a standard alphabet and spelling. I recall it being frustrating. But I don’t think it adversely affected my subsequent reading or spelling ability at all.
