sorry -18 should be -1.8%

Seems straightforward to me but I am not savvy in stats. There is no -18; the minus sign is the graph line pointing to two drugs.

after the 35 day shutdown, Nakamura and Rockey wanted to combine the October and February study sections but after outcry from PIs we set up the December meetings. on a separate note, the 30 day deadline for Public Notice is not always enforced, although this administration is different.

The same thing happened during the 35 day shutdown. We rescheduled our late October meeting for Dec 19-20. We did 50 To 60% ND. It was a pain but not impossible. The 70% ND seems reasonable because reviewers can always call for discussion. IOW this is really not unprecedented.

Reviewers get 200$ honorarium for video or teleconference; this might be reduced to 100$ for telephone reviewer assigned only a few applications

It is a shame that he never used his position to stem the growth of vaccine refusal that led to our current measles outbreak.

Well it seems like Dr. Woychik moved up in the organization. Congratulations to him!

Let’s not whitewash the fact that in the 60s Harvard scientists funded by the sugar industry published work that downplayed the role of sugar in CVD. This prolly led to increased sugar consumption that may have played a role in the rise of obesity prevalence. I suspect these were NIH supported.

<<their foreign education is “equivalent to education received in accredited educational institutions* in the U.S.“>>
This is standard language for lower level NIH jobs such as SRO or PO. At least it was ten years ago when a Canadian colleague applied for SRO job in USA jobs.

He (Jay Bhatty) gave a presentation at the NCI advisory board meeting. I saw the video cast. He even answered a couple questions. NCI calls their advisory council, an advisory board. isn’t that special?

Thank you Dr. Fauci for speaking out on this topic during your career leading the NIAID. What a fantastic public servant leading the nation’s largest institute for infectious disease.

Nevertheless, it is going to be challenging to get consistent reviews, especially given the very different approaches to review, editing critiques and scoring criteria across the various ICs.

Oops. I meant challenge instead of fiasco.

She was the point person that managed the whole “challenge” grant fiasco. She got itte done.

They need to bring Toni Scarpa back. “Tumultuos” time doesn’t go far enough.
August 7, 2025 at 7:00 PM
Specific review instructions in Section V clearly state:
<<Only the review criteria described below will be considered in the review process. >>
There was a lot of variability within CSR reviews before Scarpa, but my training in 2004 (and after) was always reviewers can only address Section V.
August 5, 2025 at 8:24 PM
For example see grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...
The addition of these specific criteria in section V is relatively recent. If the language in section V is the generic “parent” rpg language then reviewers and study section have no business evaluating responsiveness to the NOSI, same as it ever was.

The only review criteria that should be evaluated by study section are those specifically listed in “Application Review Criteria”, section V of the announcement. Some ICs have inserted specific review criteria in Section V that addresses the specific interests of the NOSI.

How could this happen under the great public health leadership of the past 40-50 years of the national institute of allergy and infectious disease?
July 16, 2025 at 11:57 PM
This looks like it uses Microsoft teams not NIH videacast? Mebbe not open to public.
May 19, 2025 at 3:08 PM
I believe Dr. Fauci was a key public health policy maker in charge of NIAID during the great unvaccination era that led to the current measles fiasco. I can’t recall him speaking out against the parents who beseeched the schools to allow their precious to skip vaccinations.

Consider for example, NIDDK covers diabetes, nutrition, liver function, digestive diseases. That range is about as wide ranging as Dr. Berg’s example. The proposed systems biology institute encompassing some aspects from NIDDK, NHLBI, AND the muscle institute seems conceptually appropriate.
