They're in a bit of a catch 22 when rationalizing it to their readers. How do you explain that it has a ton of natural resources and strategic importance that are only accessible once the glaciers melt without admitting global warming is a thing and going against decades of newscorp propaganda.

Plot wise: it's implied Vecna basically beat Will the first time in psychic battle™️ bc he made him see everyone abandoning him if he came out. So he basically says "fuck, I'll tell everyone and he can't use it against me." So it is kind of about him in that sense.
Its a dumb plot beat though.
