We, our society, the world could also need strong knots of solidarity, providing stability and protection from drifting into dangerous waters.

How happy I was when, as a child, I finally got shoes with Velcro fasteners and the constant tying of bows and knots came to an end. For sailors a well-tied knot didn't lose its importance. A tie to the land, an aesthetic connection to the shore, to protect against drifting away.

The cliché of the sailor is an unbound free spirit with no fixed ties, but at the same time knowing how to tie a good knot is part of the basics.
