WheenThe Treaty of Waitangi and te Tiriti o Waitangi - by both their presence and absence in political and legal discourse - have been central to the relationship between Mãori and the Crown since 1840.' But the Treaty relationship has mattered more to Mãori as the basis for rights to authority, land and other resources since the Crown's earliest Treaty breaches. The trajectory of this Treaty relationship between Mãori and the Crown is such that it now seems appropriate to reflect on where that relationship has come from, where it has got to and what the future may hold for it. Historical Treaty settlements are nearing an end-point, and many completed settlements have established new relationships between Mãori and the Crown in their many forms. This book reflects on these relationships; it is by no means a comprehensive review but rather a sample of what Treaty relationships look like across the motu today. It includes examples of relationships between the Crown and Mãori at the national, regional and local levels, between tauiwi and Mäori, and between hap and hap in light of the impacts of Treaty settlements.
