My Town Meeting colleague (and statewide housing power player!) Rachel Heller and I filed an amendment to our town’s MBTA Communities plan—it did not win but in my first piece of legislation ever we did much better than I expected. I texted my wife:

I certainly would not have imagined that going to medical school would lead me to be cosponsoring an amendment in my streetcar suburb’s Town Meeting, focused on eliminating footprint and separation requirements in our state-mandated upzoning law. But I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for my patients.

Debating about whether this aging industrial site should be converted into housing, Town Meeting Members in my town need to be regularly reminded that arguing “but if we build it there will be more kids and kids increase the school budget” is a potential violation of federal housing law.
