"These estimates suggest that by 2025, Brexit had reduced UK GDP by 6% to 8%, with the impact accumulating gradually over time. We estimate that investment was reduced by between 12% and 18%, employment by 3% to 4% and productivity by 3% to 4%"

Policy & investment needs to focus creating the conditions for people to move more (whatever the activity; it really can be *anything*!) in their lives to realise this wide-ranging benefit.

This demands recognising spatial variation, encouraging plurality, and measuring system maturity.
Inactivity costing £20bn a year, says Sport England
Funding agency Sport England says inactivity is costing £20bn a year as it calls for more investment in sport.

Very excited to be receiving @birdyword.bsky.social's The Land Trap tomorrow. As a fellow land economics and policy geek it should be a proper read. I'm sure it'll build on the brilliant work of Andro Linklater's 'Owning the Earth' - my favourite history book on land to date.

"...we show that exposed municipalities [to the Tour de France] experience declines in far-right support of 0.03–0.04 standard deviations. The effect exceeds 0.1 [SDs] in recent elections and is strongest in poorer areas and in towns with high prior far-right support"

This is a fascinating thread with clear walk-through.

Tl;dr - cost of living, the economy, and health are the three most important issues for people.
Yesterday, we put out a report on the most important issues to voters.

We know that immigration now tops the traditional most important issues question (see below from @yougov.co.uk).

But that doesn't tell the full story.

Here is a rundown of the experiments we did to test this out (A THREAD):

Why populism became popular
It appeals more to a way of thinking than to a set of ideas — but is it just wrong?

Just outstanding television. And I'm here waiting to watch the final as per the schedule and not on-demand. It's been a real tonic.

This is amazing, I had no idea. There is one on a wall on our street and thought it might be utilities-based. The map shows that there are so many OSBs!
I've discovered a new non-extreme, slow-sport that involves hunting down Ordnance Survey Benchmarks. It's like a laid back Pokémon Go I guess.

I case you don't know, OSBs are marks or plates placed on buildings, walls etc to show the elevation above sea level.

They often look like this...

Fascinating paper exploring the economic impact of populist leaders coming to power. Lots in here but two key things for me:
1. Over 15 years GDP/capita decreases by 10%; with
2. No discernible change to inequality over same period.

Bring back small phones! This is my iphone 13 mini. It is a perfectly-sized phone. But it's going to die - in a few years, Apple will stop supporting it w/updates. Yet there are now NO new smartphones to buy on the market that fit the human hand. www.ft.com/content/6332...
