They’re smaller in number in reality than online. I’m certain most of those involved in the online discourse can’t be swayed/aren’t engaging in good faith, but what about those that are? You’re right about the impact we can have with family/friends. My thoughts weren’t just about online interaction.

I’m paraphrasing Deborah Frances White here, but as allies shouldn’t we be making sure that we’re not leaving these gender critical people any more transphobic than we found them? Why can’t we use the distance we have from the issue to try to build bridges and change minds instead?

I think the insults and anger serve no purpose but to push those people deeper into the arms of the most extreme wing of their allies. We might feel good for standing up for trans people, but we’re not doing anything but causing more harm.

The trans people I know are exhausted by this, it’s personal and immediate to them and anger is totally understandable when the issue has such an immediate impact. But as allies we have the distance to try to engage gender criticals in an empathetic, to encourage a reflection on their stance.
