Postdoc at Tampere University, Finland, researching queer histories of rurality and DIY / 'ITE' art

I'm a cultural geographer w/ special expertise in visual geographies and geographies of sexualities. Also write on affect, emotion and asexualities.
Finnish painter Magnus Enckell was born on this week (9 Nov) in 1870. Thanks to @queermodernisms.bsky.social via Insta, I've been enjoying reading about his life and viewing his works.

1. Awakening Faun (1914)
2. By The Window (1919) - a slighter more green representation of my postdoc life atm!

In Turku at Åbo Akademi today for Gender Studies Day. So many great discussions circulating around crip-queer-feminisms, and archival time-travelling with a keynote from Eliza Steinbock. Thanks to the organisers for bringing us together!

Had a fun time co-facilitating this workshop for LGBTQ+ people from rural Somerset with my friend @jamesaldridgeart.bsky.social ❤️

Grateful also to Flo Fitzgerald for extending the invitation, to Spike Island Bristol for the support, and to Hauser & Wirth Somerset for hosting!

a pic of us and a pic from our field site: we are attempting to draw attention to the many-fold (i.e. not straight-forwardly sexual) desires that seem to be marked here by the site's many visitors!

On a high after presenting with my friend and collaborator, Daniel, at the @esasexuality.bsky.social conference in Palermo!

We shared progress on our side project, which concerns the queer and bisexual geographies of cruising spaces in Bristol. What better way to kick off bisexual visibility week?!

adoro!

In Sicily for the European Sociological Association‘s Gender and Sexuality group’s conference!

Daniel (R) and I will be presenting on bisexual spaces and queer futures tomorrow, where we will think the marks and ephemera in a Bristol cruising space. Colin (L) completes our mini Bristol delegation!

Last week saw the Royal Geographical Society's inaugural Asexual Geographies panel!

@rachelbayer.bsky.social & I were delighted to present alongside Wenmei and Zofia, following our previous article's invitation for scholars to #joinus in this new field of inquiry. Thanks to the 20+ attendees too!

Bloomin’ amazing personal news: I will begin a 2+ yr Postdoctoral Fellowship at Tampere University in October!

My project ‘Queer Rural Exposures’ will work through 4 rural queers’ photo collections + use affect theory to understand how queer spaces are ‘conveyed’ through visual historic material.

And that’s a wrap! My heart is very full by how caring, gentle and connected our group was able to become over 3 short days.

Thanks to everyone for co-creating this event with us! I hope that this network of collegiality, care and consideration can serve us into the future too 💛

Day 2 of the Queer Geographies writing retreat: more somatic and creative workshops, and a whole lot of writing time ofc.
August 22, 2025 at 7:00 AM
The first day of the Queer Geographies writing retreat was a success! So lush to see the group gathered in circle and sharing so readily 💛 Onto the next!

Thanks again to SSQRG, the RGS, Leeds’ School of Geography and LBU’s SSSH! research group for their generous financial support.

Blue Jean (2022, dir. Georgia Oakley)

A rewatch as free to stream on iPlayer! I maintain it’s the most affecting and effective mediation of Section 28 I’ve seen. Recommend if you’re interested in the politics of emotions and sexuality.

Young Hearts (2025, dir Anthony Schatteman)

It's rare for a queer-rural film to be great in my experience. Yet this one is. It handles an age-old small-town coming-out narrative with expert hands. Told through personal places and rural fringelands, + shows that kindness will always open others up.

The Uni LGBTQ+ network produced a series of flyers highlighting staff members' research, including mine!

I think the flyers look great - and it's nice to have the institution shout about its queer and trans researchers in times like these. So, thanks to Sindy and Rowan for organising this 💜

Congratulations to my colleague @cescatp.bsky.social on her recent publication!

Cesca's environmental scan of 50+ online sperm donation sites will support our ongoing research here at LBU.
