Before genetic testing, I always thought we were converted Jews - the last name, dad spoke with a yiddish accent, my grandmother's maiden name Evatz is generally Jewish, no Finks/Evatzs in their parish records before the Ottoman Turks invasion, asked my cousins - they were incensed...but not so...

My dad's mom died in child birth, my grandfather married her sister & had a daughter & son in Ely, they went back to Austria Hungry in May 1914 to sell their properties, the war started in June...dad was orphaned with a stepmother...

When he was growing up their cash crops were plums & corn...it was easier to take it to market in Trieste, Italy making it into sljivovitza - plum brandy - 140 proof...
