There are thousands of freelancers looking for editorial work, at all degrees of competence. No one ever needs to choose between a bad editor and none at all…

Some trad published authors prefer to use their own freelance editors. And if you're self-published, you'll need to source a freelance editor anyway. Again, choose wisely: this needs to be someone you can trust, who understands your genre of writing, and preferably who knows the book business, too.

If you're with a trad pubisher, you'll probably be assigned an editor. Take time to get to know tham. Make sure you're both on the same page. If you find you're having trouble communicating with them, or if you feel their suggestions aren't helpful, then say so. If necessary, ask for someone else.
