I make comics, letter and edit other people's comics, and run Power & Magic Press. ( ◡̀_◡́)ᕤ joamette.carrd.co (18+ because I'm a florid cusser.)
Agreed. In fact, I just said to my partner "you know... maybe that's why no one ever adapts the raw Frankenstein vibe accurately... It's actually A Lot (TM)."

I don't know if this makes me the ultimate sicko or what, but I went into that film bracing for impact only to be like "oh wow, very well done, why is everyone being such a baby about this online???" (NO PUN INTENDED!!!!)

- Loses the love of his life at the same time that she finally sees their son...
- Witnesses remain to do with the outcome of this tale what they will...

(The "reverse" of it all is the death of a baby vs. the birth of a corpse.)

- Must hide his son from his entire family to protect them and himself from the horror of his mistakes.
- Everyone around him is embracing life while desperately hunting for WHY the man they knew has changed.
- Tone and POV are set by the man's experience of guilt, revulsion, fear.

Like, literally, it didn't occur to me until this moment that The Coffee Table is a reverse Frankenstein:

- Man has everything...except control.
- Willfully brings a monstrosity into his house.
- Unwittingly commits an atrocity at the border of life and death.
- Is broken by it: body, mind, soul.

#6 - The creature is a secret the creature is a secret the cerature is a secret the ceraturuieheow literally he lies to everyone about the creature having ever happened until it is too late BECAUSE, and this is important...

THE HORROR OF THE NOVEL IS VICTOR'S ESCALATING GUILT, RAGE, AND LONELINESS.

#5 - What pisses me off the most from a feminist perspective is that Victor IS a woman. I mean, YES, Victor is a MAN; however he is a vehicle of exploration for A WOMAN'S EXPERIENCE, namely Mary Shelley's. His immediate rejection and revulsion toward the creature mirrors her POST-PARTUM DEPRESSION.

#4 - Where are the alps? Where is the awful majesty of the mountain ranges and glaciers, the one place where Victor can find peace because it puts him back in his place subordinate to nature itself, in the face of which is he is NOTHING? WHERE?!?

#3 - *holds a knife* If one my person girlbossifies Elizabeth istfg...

Her role in the novel is as a foil to Victor. They grow up together, have the exact same childhood, and develops an OPPOSITE PERSONALITY to his (self-effacing, caretaking, cheerful, strong), and it drives him MAD WITH GUILT.

#2 - His father is abusive now? For reasons?? Giving him a valid traumatic backstory?? When a major theme is "nature vs nurture", and critically, Victor has an IDYLLIC AND HAPPY CHILDHOOD to contrast the monster's shitty life (monster has an excuse but Victor DOES NOT).

IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER:

#1 - Why is he so old. Why must Victor Frankenstein ALWAYS be so fricken' OOOOLD?? He is in his EARLY TWENTIES when he makes the creature, his youthful arrogance is A VERY IMPORTANT PART OF THE STORY.
